Arequipa is known as Ciudad Blanca - White City, because the color of its houses, built with sillar (stone of volcanic origin and of almost white color). It was important bastion during the fight for the independence of Peru in XIX century. 
Places to Visit The Cathedral Imposing construction made of sillar, occcupies one of the sides of the Main Square. The most remarkable of this building, are its big altar, the giant organ and the wood carved pulpit. Santa Catalina's Convent It was founded in 1580. This convent in fact is a citadel where women arrived to be devoted to the service of God. It is divided in two main parts: the citadel and the booth. The Company Built by the Jesuist, this church has a completely sculpted facade and a beautifully carved wooden pulpit. Founder house Construction located in the sector of Huasache, built in the XVI century by the founder of the city, Garci Rodríguez de Carvajal. Museum of the University of San Agustín The section of History and Anthropology of this important museum, has an important collection of ceramics of diverse cultures highlights. Mirador of Yanahuara The arches of the mirador are the perfect frame for pictures of the White City. Sabandia The rigth place to enjoy the beauty of Arequipa countryside. One of the principal atractions besides the landscape, is the mill, built in the XVIII century. |
